Orphan Black introduced a transgender clone [SPOILERS]

I don’t typically like to blog twice in one day, but I gotta talk about this and I don’t want to send off a thousand tweets. So, this past weekend’s episode of Orphan Black, which is possibly my favorite show right now, introduced a transgender character. If you’re not familiar with Orphan Black, the show revolves around a bunch of clones, all played by Tatiana Maslany. [Read More]

Amelia teaches Trans 101: "In reality you have a penis"

Yesterday, I received the above messages on Facebook and I thought it would make for a great second lesson in the Trans 101 series of posts here. Typically, questions/messages/comments like this tend to go a certain way. When you’re used to having your identity and humanity questioned and your answers to those questions dismissed, it’s hard to not get defensive when something looks like it’s going in that direction. I now proudly and forever display being a transgender marathoner on my wrist

By the time I got to the last two years of high school, most of people in my main circle of friends were all about tattoos. I guess that’s normal when you spend most of your time with the punk and indie underground kids. I had a few tattoos that I wanted too, but I never went through with anything. Throughout high school, college, and my post college years, I was stopped from getting tattoos by one single question, “if I was a woman, would I want this on my body? [Read More]

How not to be an ally. Or how Piers Morgan is an ass. Or, no, I never was was a man.

See the problem here? Last night, Piers Morgan invited transgender activist and all-around awesome person Janet Mock on his show for a segment to discuss her new book _Redefining Realness._ In promos for the segment and throughout the segment itself, Piers Morgan repeatedly sensationalized Janet’s story, referred to her as having previously been a man, and discussed her genitals. So much wrongness here. [Read More]

When dysphoria strikes...

This past weekend, my wife and I finally got around to seeing Frozen, which has instantly become my favorite non-Pixar Disney movie! Seriously, it’s that good! Unfortunately, as amazing as Frozen is, it was also incredibly triggering of feelings I haven’t had in a while. My old pal dysphoria decided it was time to visit town. Gender dysphoria and I go way back, in fact, I can’t remember a time in my life when she wasn’t around. [Read More]

How transitioning changed me as a runner and do I have an advantage as a transgender athlete?

I’ve written about a lot of this over the course of the last few months, but a few people have requested a post dedicated to how I’ve changed as a runner because of transition. Since I’ve read two articles about transgender athletes in the past few days, I figured it was finally time to write about it myself. While my experience has been in line with the experiences of other trans women I’ve spoken to regarding the topic, I do want it to be noted that this is very specifically about my experience and it may not be universal to all transgender (women) runners. NJ transgender birth certificate bill is being sent to Gov Christie's desk to be signed. Please help!

This week, the New Jersey state senate passed bill A4097 which, if signed into law, would allow for transgender people born in New Jersey to update their birth certificates without the need for genital reconstruction surgery (or gender-confirming surgery…or whatever other name you feel is appropriate for “bottom surgery”). There is currently no indication whether or not Gov. Christie will sign A4097 into law, however, he is considering public comment on the issue. [Read More]
